About Me
Hello, thank you for visiting my website. I do hope that you enjoy my artwork.
My name is Genevieve and I am a self-taught artist. From a young child I have drawn and painted. The older I get, the more important painting becomes to me. As the years go by, it holds a larger place in my life.
My artwork is inspired by my lifelong love of stones and my fascination with drystone walling. A well-constructed drystone wall can stand for hundreds of years, and the building of one requires great skill and expertise. I am in awe of the craftsmanship involved. It is truly an artform.
Predominantly I paint the drystone walls that I love, working with acrylics on canvas. Whilst I paint plants growing in and around the walls I create, and include a wren's nest in every wall, my intention is for the stones themselves to be the main focus of each piece. I made the decision not to add animals or birds to my walls, as I feel their inclusion would suspend the painting in a specific moment in time. I prefer to convey the impression of a more fluid timeframe.
I find the process of creating the stones very soothing. I enjoy playing with the colours, and as a result some of my walls have more vibrant, frivolous hues than others. Each stone has between six and nine layers of paint, building up the appearance of texture and form. In order to depict the impact of nature on the stones, I weather them, by painting lichen, algae, and occasionally moss.
A drystone wall is so much more than just a structure of stones. It is somehow a living, breathing thing. It sustains life, both flora and fauna, and I hope that I manage to communicate that in my work.
